Rachel Alston Jones Banks grave
Grave of Rachel Alston Jones Banks. She has a memorial at the obelisk of her husband Ralph Banks Sr. at Coldwater Methodist Church, Elbert County, Georgia. Picture taken from Elbert Banks, M.D.. Sarah Banks Franklin: Banks of Elbert. Greenwood Cemetery, Burial Place of Rachel Alston Jones Banks. Wife of Capt. Ralph Banks Sr. born 1757 Granville, NC, died 1823 Elbert County, Georgia. Rachel was the daughter of Capt. James Jones of the NC Lighthorse Cavalry and wife Charity Alston. Charity was the daughter of Col. Solomon Alston of the Wake, NC Provisional Congress and Commander of the Wake Militia in the Revolutionary War. Both Capt. Jones and Col. Alston were members of the North Carolina Provisional Congress in addition to their service in the American Revoluton, and for this reason the DAR placed a "True Daughter of the Revolution marker on her grave. Her husband Ralph Banks Sr. is buried at Coldwater Methodist Church in Elbert County, Georgia with an obelisk that also commemorates his beloved wife Rachel, who moved to Tuscaloosa, Alabama with son Marion in 1823 after the death of her husband, in order to be near daughters Sarah Banks Sims and Mary Banks Jones, as well as sons Willis and Dunstan Banks. Dr. Richard Banks of Homer, Georgia, son of Ralph Sr. and Rachel, served the poor and Native American population of Northeast Georgia, and for that reason became the namesake of Banks County, by order of the Georgia Legislature. Descendants of Dr. Richard Banks, Elbert Banks, M.D. and my ancestor Ralph Banks Jr. remained behind in Northeast Georgia.
