Our Family's Journey Through Time from Europe to Canada and the USA

Marie Elizabeth Ravary dit Francoeur

"Mary Hart" is my 2nd Great-Grandmother and my most recent French Canadian ancestor to arrive in America. She came with her family in 1865 when she was only 12. They set up their home in Benton, Indiana. (I assume her father changed the family name from Ravary dit Francoeur to the more American-sounding Hart, but don't know for sure.)

Leopold Arnold Sorensen

My paternal grandfather is my most recent Danish ancestor. Coming over from Lokken, Denmark, in 1923 when he was 19, he ended up in Idaho, where he became a naturalized US citizen in 1943.

Frank William Mayhak

Frank William Mayhak (spelled Franz Maihack on the immigration ship manifest) is my most recent German/Prussian ancestor. He and his family arrived in New York in July 1870 when Frank was only 3 and headed for the upper Midwest, settling in Minnesota.

Philemon Hawkins II (Jr)

One of my 256 7th Great-Grandfathers on my father's side. His father, Philemon Hawkins I (Sr), and mother, Ann Howard, were originally from England in the early 1700s and said to be descended from Sir John Hawkins, one of Queen Elizabeth I's favorites. (Unfortunately, John Hawkins also was the first successful slave trader in what was known as the Triangle Trade - Europe to Africa to the Colonies and back.) Philemon II was born in Colonial Virginia in 1717 and participated in the Revolutionary War on the colonies' side.
